Free Agent Gary Forbes Worked Out For Lakers Earlier This Week

Gary ForbesAfter losing out on Dwight Howard to the Houston Rockets, the Lakers have shifted their focus on turing a collection of older veterans into a younger core of guys who better fit head coach Mike D’Antoni’s offensive system.

The additions of Nick Young, Jordan Farmar, and Wesley Johnson on the perimeter were all a step in that direction. You can also add the drafting of Duke prospect, Ryan Kelly, as another step in that direction as he’s a forward who can stretch the floor and give point guard Steve Nash room to operate in pick-and-roll sets.

According to Hoopshype, the Lakers still aren’t done trying to add athleticism to their roster. Free agent wing Gary Forbes worked out for the Lakers on Tuesday. There have been no details as to how well the workout went yet, and Forbes is set to work out for the Knicks next week.

Forbes can be a bright spot off the bench if he’s offered a guaranteed contract. He’s a wing who can play both the two and three spots. He’s a decent shooter from long range and is a serviceable defender. What would make Forbes a good pick up, however, is he has shown great slashing instincts during his career, something the Lakers will miss this season with the loss of Antawn Jamison.

Forbes has spent two seasons in the NBA. He began his career with the Denver Nuggets and spent the 2011-12 season with the Toronto Raptors and the 2012-13 season with the Houston Rockets.

The Lakers also met with Lou Amundson, who felt he had a positive meeting with the Lakers. Lamar Odom still looms as a possibility as an addition to the front court.
