Jeanie Buss

Lakers’ executive vice president of business operations, Jeanie Buss, joined Mark Willard and Mychal Thompson on ESPNLA NOW to discuss numerous topics including the Dwight Howard billboards around Los Angeles.

Before Howard decided to leave, many fans were in disagreement over the billboards. Some felt it catered to his personality which would help the Lakers re-sign him; others felt the franchise didn’t have to “beg” for a player to return.

When asked about the billboards, Buss believes it likely wasn’t the ideal thing to do, but understands the Lakers organization has to learn how to operate without the late Dr. Buss:

“Putting up a billboard was maybe not the right thing, but we have to learn to do things differently because Dr. Buss isn’t here.”

It’s interesting to hear that Buss was not in agreement with the Lakers’ decision to put those billboards around Los Angeles. Since the passing of Dr. Buss, there has been speculation that the basketball and business side of operations have not seen eye-to-eye.

While there are many who feel that Jeanie should take a larger role in the Lakers organization, she is committed to working with her brother, Jim:

“This is the way my Dad set it up and this is the system we are trying to make work.”

In a time when the Lakers organization is in transition due to the passing of Dr. Buss, it should be encouraging for fans to hear Jeanie’s thoughts. As long as she is around, fans should be confident that the Lakers will find ways to get the team back to their championship ways.
