Last Season Summary:
After struggling in New Jersey, Shawne Williams did not play in the NBA this past season. He was arrested in Tennessee for possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to sell. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to one day in jail and a $500 fine.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Shawne Williams is a combo forward who thrives on spot-up and fast break opportunities. He has size (6’9″) and athleticism, but doesn’t have the strength to continually compete against other power forwards. Williams has shown the ability to stretch the floor with his quick release and shot 40 percent from three-point land in Mike D’Antoni’s system in New York. He is an extremely talented player, but has struggled with his work ethic.
Expected Role:
If Mike D’Antoni plans to utilize eleven players this upcoming season, it will likely signal a four-man rotation in the frontcourt. While the Lakers have brought in numerous stretch-fours, Williams played one season with D’Antoni in New York and has the advantage and experience to be a part of the rotation. Should Williams make the team, he will likely play spot minutes behind Pau Gasol, Chris Kaman, and Jordan Hill.
This Year’s Expectations:
After being out for the entire season, it’s difficult to image that Williams will be able to replicate the career season he had under Mike D’Antoni. If he is somehow able to produce 7.1 points and shoot 40 percent from three-point land again, Williams will be a surprise and welcomed addition for the Los Angeles Lakers.
