The NBA and the NBA Players Association reached a tentative new collective bargaining agreement earlier this week. While the agreement is great as the threat of a lockout is now settled, some new rules could drastically effect the Lakers moving forward.

First off, the veteran minimum, mid-level exception, bi-annual exception, rookie-scale contracts will all be increased by 45%. This could impact the Lakers as they try to clear space for a max contract this offseason. However, players like Julius Randle, Brandon Ingram, and Lou Williams are now on bargain contracts.

The NBA also introduced new two-way contracts, that allow teams to assign players back and forth from their D-League affiliates without taking up a roster spot. This type of contract could have been useful for the Lakers as they really liked Notre Dame’s Zach Auguste but saw him leave to play overseas after he didn’t make the team’s 15-man roster.

The new CBA is clearly targeted at stopping super teams like the Warriors from forming. However, there are now more incentives for players to re-sign with the teams they currently play with. Something that could help the Lakers grow as Randle, Russell and Ingram move off their rookie contracts.
