It appears that GM Mitch Kupchak will be staying with the Los Angeles Lakers a little while longer with ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne reporting that he’s agreed to a multiyear contract with the team:

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a multiyear extension with general manager Mitch Kupchak, sources with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday night.

With the Lakers on the verge of completing one of the worst seasons in franchise history and continuing the rebuilding process this summer, the team wanted Kupchak in the fold moving forward.

As arguably one of the best general managers in the league today, Kupchak was an apprentice of Jerry West’s during the end of the Showtime era in Los Angeles and proceeded to take over for the Laker legend in 2000.

Although it has been a rough couple of seasons for the Lakers, Kupchak’s contributions have been invaluable over the years. Many believe Kupchak is one of the best GMs in the NBA to work with and he’s played a major role in the team’s rebuilding process in the post Shaquille O’Neal era in Los Angeles.

Kupchak will have his work cut out for him moving forward as the team attempts to rebuild once again while dealing with an aging Kobe Bryant, a new CBA and an extremely competitive Western Conference.
