At least one free agent understands what it means to be a Los Angeles Laker. Although it took three seasons for him to realize it, Jordan Farmar returns to the Lakers as a different man and is clearly excited about the opportunity to wear a Lakers uniform once again.
In a phone interview with ESPN LA’s Dave McMenamin, Farmar expressed his strong desires to wear a Lakers uniform again, even if it meant sacrificing his three-year, $10.5 million deal with Anadolu Efes (Turkey):
“They knew about my deal overseas and really didn’t push it earlier because they didn’t think I’d be willing to give up that guaranteed money I had over there. I wanted to be back in the NBA, but more importantly, back with the Lakers. This is the only situation I would have taken a minimum deal with.”
Since the departure of Dwight Howard to Houston, many have criticized the Lakers’ front office and believe they have lost their lure since Dr. Jerry Buss’ passing. However, the Los Angeles native believes this is still the place, at least for him:
“I’ve been a Laker fan since I was born. I grew up a Laker fan, so regardless of where I am or who I’m playing for, or what I’m doing in life, I’m always going to stay connected to what’s going on here (in Los Angeles).”
After leaving the Lakers in 2010 for an expanded role, it seems like his experiences with the New Jersey Nets and playing overseas have made him appreciate wearing a Lakers uniform:
“I missed my family, I miss being home and, ultimately, I missed being a Laker.”
After Farmar left in July 2010, the team lost an athletic point guard and have struggled guarding that position since his departure. With Nash set to turn 40-years-old in February, signing Farmar for the veteran’s minimum was both unexpected and much needed. He now returns to Los Angeles with a much expanded role and hopes to capitalize on this golden opportunity.
In four seasons with the Lakers, the two-time champion Farmar averaged 6.9 points and 2.1 assists.
