Lakers News: Kurt Rambis Wants To Use Team’s Size As An Advantage

los_g_bryant_rambis1_sw_576The Los Angeles Lakers may have lost their starting center Dwight Howard in free agency, but the team still has a fairly big frontcourt. Pau Gasol, Chris Kaman and Jordan Hill will man the paint for the Lakers, and their size will be something teams will have trouble containing.

Newly hired assistant coach Kurt Rambis spoke to the Los Angeles Times’ Eric Pincus, and he talked about this upcoming season and what he expects from the offense. Rambis would like to see the Lakers take advantage of their size in the paint despite Mike D’Antoni’s offensive system, which is more run-and-gun oriented.

“The [Lakers] still have big people and I think you have to take advantage of the big people,” said Rambis in a phone interview with The Times on Thursday. “You can’t ignore them because they are an asset to your offense.”

Last season, the Lakers were unable to find cohesion between Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol, which negatively impacted the team’s play on both ends of the court. However, Gasol will be moving to the center spot next season, a position where he feels more comfortable.

The Lakers’ coaching staff will have their hands full once training camps starts, as not only the offense needs some tweaks, but the defense, which should the first priority for the coaches, needs to be a focus as well.
