The Lakers are firmly vested in trying to bring back Dwight Howard next season. But if that were not to work out the Lakers are already looking at some other options to bolster their roster for next year.

One possibility is free agent guard Monta Ellis, who recently opted out of the final season of his contract with the Milwaukee Bucks:

ESPN’s Chris Broussard reports that the Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks are also interested in the young guard, and the Bucks are very adamant about wanting to bring Ellis back to Milwaukee and are montaellisprepared to let their other free agent guard, Brandon Jennings leave in free agency.

Ellis, who originally signed a six-year, $66 million deal with the Golden State Warriors, is close with Lakers free agent Dwight Howard. The two have long desired to play together.

To be fair, the Lakers chances of acquiring Monta Ellis are relatively nonexistent. Unlike the Hawks and Mavericks, they do not have the cap space to sign him outright, thus the only way to acquire him would be through a sign and trade.

Even to pull off a sign and trade many things would have to fall in place for the Lakers to make the move so it is unlikely to happen.

Basically, don’t expect Monta Ellis to be on the Lakers next season.

Ellis averaged 19 points and 6 assists in starting all 82 games last season for the Milwaukee Bucks.
