The Los Angeles Lakers have officially exercised the team option on shooting guard Jodie Meeks according to Mike Trudell of Lakers.com via Twitter:

During the 2012-13 NBA season, Meeks averaged 7.9 points and 2.2 rebounds while shooting 35.7 percent from beyond the arc. Meeks will make $1.55 million next season and will be a unrestricted free agent next year.

Although Meeks isn’t the ideal candidate to backup Kobe Bryant or to be the best option from distance, the Lakers don’t have a lot of options heading into the free agency and were bound to exercise the option on Meeks.

Along with Meeks being retained for the second year of the two-year contract with the Lakers, veteran forward Metta World Peace has also exercised his $7.7 million player option. Although World Peace has exercised his option, speculation continues to run rampant about the team potentially using the amnesty clause to on the former Defensive Player of the Year.
