Lakers Rumors & News Recap: What’s Up with Steve Nash?

On Wednesday night, Steve Nash was kicked in the leg by the Portland Trail Blazers’ Damian Lilliard, injuring the point guard’s fibula. Steve Nash will be out for about a week and fans have begun to wonder whether a PG will be called up to help Blake backup Nash’s position.

The Lakers already have five point guards on their team at this point, and adding a sixth for a short period of time does not make much sense. For now Steve Blake will fill Nash’s void in the starting lineup and remain the Lakers #1 choice, followed by Chris Duhon and Darius Morris. The Lakers front-office will likely wait for Nash to return and is not looking to make any moves for the time that he is out. I can feel some of you already clamoring, “Fisher! Fisher!”

What’s troublesome about Nash is the possibility of his injury to keep him out of play for up to four weeks. Elizabeth Benson analyzes why this injury is important not only to the PG position, but the back-court as a whole. One of the biggest benefits of bringing Nash to the Lakers is what he will do for Bryant. Nash’s absence will have an affect on Kobe’s game, or at least the type of game that he was hoping to have this season.

After the loss to the Los Angeles Clippers last Friday, backup point guard Steve Blake had some crass words for a heckling fan in the crowd at Staples Center. Players getting feisty during game time is nothing new, but Steve Blake was just fined$25,000 for the comments he made to the fan.

Hoping it won’t be much, Kobe sat out at practice for a second straight day today. But don’t take this as an indicator of his injury worsening, as he will play against Utah on Wednesday night. Bryant led the team in assists with eight, added seven rebounds and 15 points against the Pistons.

If you haven’t today, get out and vote! My friend today put it best: “If the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals and World Series had a baby, and that baby only happened every four years, and everyone had the right to help determine the outcome, and the winner got to lead the free world, we’d name it Election Day. Kind of a big deal. Get out and vote!”
