With so much attention shifted to the Lakers pursuit of free agent Dwight Howard, the Lakers reached out to several free agents last night.

It’s clear that general manager Mitch Kupchak is targeting perimeter shooters as he tries to build a team that would fit better under head coach Mike D’Antoni’s system.

Names like Francisco Garcia, Nick Young, Carlos Delfino and Wayne Ellington were mentioned as free agency opened and Dave McMeniman of ESPNLA.com reported they also reached out to a big man:

In 41 games as the starter last season, Mullens averaged 11.7 points as he finally got an opportunity to start with the rebuilding Bobcats.

If the Lakers were to sign Mullens, it would likely create some speculation that they would be in the market to trade forward Pau Gasol. Entering the last year of his contract, Gasol is a prime candidate to be traded as it sounds like he’ll endure another summer filled with rumors about a potential trade.

However, what the Lakers decided to do will be tied to Howard’s decision since his departure would make it more likely that he’s wearing the purple and gold for another season.

The Lakers only have the mini-mid level and veterans minimum, but it’s likely that they won’t do anything major until they get their decision from Howard.
