Game 1 on Sunday afternoon didn’t end with the result the Lakers were hoping for when they fell to the San Antonio Spurs 91-79. And, much to the chagrin of the Lakers, turns out a whole bunch of people watched them lose that game.

According to Ben Cafardo, Manager of Communications for NBA on ESPN, the Lakers/Spurs contest highlighted the highest-rated opening playoff weekend in the last decade.

I guess that’s why the league decided to put the Lakers, even as the seventh seed, in their prime 12:30 PM slot on Sunday afternoon. That’s the slot generally reserved for the biggest matchup of the weekend. So the fact that the league put the Lakers there instead of some of the better matchups (Nuggets/Warriors, Knicks/Celtics) or the games with their biggest stars (LeBron James, Kevin Durant), is a bit surprising. But after seeing the numbers, I guess the league knows what they’re doing.

The Lakers and Spurs will play Wednesday before heading back to Los Angeles for Game 3 and 4 on Friday and Sunday.
