Mitch Kupchak Jokes About Shaq’s New Minority Kings Ownership

Shaq Jersey RetirementShaquille O’Neal’s minority ownership in the Sacramento Kings went public on Monday morning, and plenty of Lakers fans relived the moment when Shaq famously referred to the Kings as the “Queens” during their 2002 Western Conference Championship campaign. What does Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak think of his former player joining the Kings ownership group? First, Kupchak had quite the line about the recent news of Shaq mentoring Demarcus Cousins.

“I’m glad I’m not DeMarcus Cousins though, I’ll tell you that. If Shaq told me to do something, I wouldn’t argue,” Kupchak joked at the Lakers practice facility on Wednesday.

On a more serious note, Kupchak had nothing but kind words for Shaq’s latest venture, despite displaying an evident smirk while answering the question.

“Obviously it’s a bit surprising you know — Sacramento and Shaquille. I think they’ve got a new ownership with energy and excitement and they’ve made some changes. Shaquille and the new arena… just a passionate fight that went on for years to keep the organization in Sacramento.”

Shaq is one of a select few former NBA players that now has a small stake in an NBA franchise. Michael Jordan and Jason Kidd, to name a couple current and Magic Johnson before selling a part of his Lakers share to become a part of the Dodgers ownership group.

Shaq has recently made comments that the new Downtown Sacramento arena will be like nothing anyone has ever seen, a revolutionary experience.
