NBA: New Orleans Hornets at Dallas MavericksFor the second consecutive off-season, the Dallas Mavericks have struck out on a Tier-A free agent as they’ve been notified by Dwight Howard and his representatives that he won’t be taking his talents to Dallas.

The Mavericks loomed as a fringe factor in the sweepstakes as the contingent of Mark Cuban, Dirk Nowitzki and Donnie Nelson felt “good” about their meeting with Howard, but the feeling wasn’t mutual.

Marc Stein of ESPN.com was the first to report the news:

Howard’s big criteria for teams entering his meetings was their ideas about winning a title, but with 35-year-old Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks didn’t have much of a chance.

However, since the Mavericks don’t have much star power, they would’ve been able to grant his wishes of becoming the focal point of their offense.

With Dallas eliminated, there are four teams still vying for his services, while most believe it’ll come down to Houston and the Lakers, the Warriors loom large as Howard could make his decision today.
