The Los Angeles Lakers are a franchise that has always been able to land top-tier free agents, even with the exception being Dwight Howard. However, Howard’s decision to sign elsewhere will not be a common trend, and the front office is looking to rebuild through free agency in the near future.

In the coming years, Cleveland Cavalier Kyrie Irving will hit the free agency market, and he will without question be one of the most sought after players. The Lakers have been a rumored destination for Irving, and many are hoping the promising young point guard could sign his next contract with Los Angeles.

But before Lakers fans drool over the chance of Irving in purple and gold, it will take a lot to make the former Duke Blue Devil leave what he has going in Cleveland. Irving spoke to the media at the USA Basketball practice, and RealGM writes that the guard is happy with his situation with the Cavs.

“I’m a Cavalier right now, I’m happy to be a Cavalier,” Irving said after the first USA Basketball practice at UNLV’s Mendenhall Center on Monday afternoon.

Someone had posted on Twitter that Irving was not “long for Cleveland.”

“I kind of had a sarcastic approach to it from what he said because it was a rumor starter,” Irving said. “I don’t think he knows anybody in my camp, and I don’t know who the guy is. That type of stuff I don’t pay any attention to. Right now I’m a Cleveland Cavalier and I’m happy to be here.”

As if he had any intention of leaving right now, Irving said, “No, no intention.”

At this point, it seems as though Irving will not follow in the footsteps of LeBron James and leave town. However, if the Cavaliers continue to struggle and Irving sees a chance to win a championship elsewhere, the point guard will have no problem switching jerseys.
