At age 94, an NBA legend is gone.

Ossie Schectman was born March 30, 1919 and is the first person to score a basket in an NBA game. He played one season for the New York Knicks and made history against the Toronto Huskies on November 1, 1946. The Knicks won the game 68–66. He averaged 8.1 pts and 2.0apg  in his one year playing for New York.

Growing up in New York, Schectman started playing basketball at Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn. He went to college at Long Island University and joined the Basketball Association of America (predecessor of the NBA) in 1946. In 1949, the BAA became the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Schectman’s basket is considered the first NBA basket ever.
