Just two years ago, Larry Sanders looked like one of the NBA’s best young big men as he nearly averaged a double-double and almost three blocks in 2013. The Bucks rewarded him by signing him to a four-year, $44 million contract extension that began this season.

Unfortunately, personal issues and injuries have hindered Sanders and he recently served a 10-game suspension for a violation of the NBA’s drug policy. Though he has served the suspension, he has yet to return to the Bucks and according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, discussions for a buyout have begun that would make Sanders a free agent:

Buyout discussions have begun between the Milwaukee Bucks and Larry Sanders that would make the recently suspended big man a free agent, according to league sources.

This would be a pretty surprising move as Sanders seemed to be a part of the long-term future for the Bucks. The team has been one of the surprises of the Eastern Conference as they currently sit sixth overall at 30-23 despite losing top draft pick Jabari Parker for the season due to a torn ACL.

Sanders would be an intriguing prospect if he hits the free agent market. While not an offensive force, Sanders is an excellent rim protector and solid rebounder at the center position. He is also only 26 years old so there is a lot of potential there.

It will be interesting to see which team is willing to take a risk on a talented player who comes with some red flags. A playoff team may not wish to sacrifice their chemistry which could make teams in dire need of talent, such as the Los Angeles Lakers, are a possibility.
