The news of Jason Collins signing a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets was one of the big storylines coming into Sunday night’s matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Nets. Jason Collins held an introductory press conference prior to the game and emphasized that his priority is to be a good basketball player according to Lakers Nation reporter Serena Winters:

I don’t really have time to think about history right now. I just have to focus on my job tonight.

Regarding comparisons with NFL Draft prospect, Michael Sam, as well as the pressure of being a crusader for the homosexual community, Collins had this to say:

It’s about [Sam] being a football player, and me being a basketball player.

Michael Sam also came out earlier this month. During a press conference at the NFL Combine, Sam expressed similar sentiments to that of Collins. A person’s sexuality should not be a defining feature of a professional athlete. Both Sam and Collins see themselves as a football player and a basketball player, respectfully. In the professional sports world, it all comes down to if an individual can compete and contribute.

Jason Collins will be on the Nets’ roster for ten days. The 35-year-old veteran could remain with the team if he can prove to be the effective defensive presence he has been known to be for his career.
