Former Los Angeles Lakers player and assistant coach Brian Shaw may finally get his first opportunity to become a head coach in the NBA. Shaw has been linked with numerous coaching vacancies in the league over the past few weeks, but it appears the Brooklyn Nets may be narrowing their search to two candidates, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports via Twitter:

Once Phil Jackson stepped away from the Los Angeles Lakers following the sweep by the Dallas Mavericks back in the 2011 NBA playoffs, Shaw seemed to be the favorite to take over as the next head coach of the storied NBA franchise. Although the consensus was it was Shaw’s job to lose, the Lakers’ front office went in a different direction by hiring Mike Brown instead.

After being passed over by the Lakers in favor of Brown, Shaw decided to become an assistant under head coach Frank Vogel with the Indiana Pacers. Shaw’s patience and reputation around the league for being one of the most respected assistants will likely pay off during the NBA off-season with the five-time NBA champion (as player and coach) nearing his first job as a head coach.

If the Nets ultimately decide to go with Lionel Hollins or another candidate before next season, Shaw may still have an opportunity with the Detroit Pistons. Former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson is currently helping the Pistons with their coaching search and has recommended Shaw as one of the best candidates available.

It seems to be only a matter of time before Shaw lands his first head coaching gig in the NBA with the only question being whether or not it will be with the Nets, Pistons or another team on the prowl for a new head coach, like the Los Angeles Clippers.
