Point Guard Possibilites: Who Should the Lakers Pursue?

With the rumors surfacing Friday evening that the Lakers might be interested in Gilbert Arenas as a potential free agent signing, we thought it would make sense to take a look at some of the other guards the Lakers have been reportedly linked to.

The difficulties at the point guard position have been glaringly apparent so far this season, and while plenty of trade talk circulates around Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, the need for a point guard seems to be the more essential area that should be addressed by the Lakers.

Gilbert Arenas: Free Agent

Arenas is currently a free agent and can be signed by any team. However, he’s had a reputation for being a locker room nightmare in the past. This has the potential to be a high risk, high reward scenario for Los Angeles. It’s just a matter of whether or not they want to take on the risk.

Kyle Lowry: Houston Rockets

Lowry was at the center of trade discussions earlier this week when a report surfaced that the Lakers may be willing to part with power forward Pau Gasol in exchange for the Rockets guard. Devin Harris: Utah Jazz

After being traded to the Jazz from the New Jersey Nets last season, Harris’ production has dropped significantly. Still, he’s a viable option for the Lakers at the point guard position. He’s younger than both Fisher and Blake, and could provide the team with some quickness and ball control.

Deron Williams: New Jersey Nets

Other than Dwight Howard, Williams has been the most talked about trade possibility in Los Angeles. After stating his desire to leave the Nets if they were unable to acquire Howard, Williams also stated that one of his preferred destinations would be L.A. and the Lakers.
