One of the biggest names on the college level mentioned as a head coaching candidate for the Los Angeles Lakers is Roy Williams of the University of North Carolina.

Williams is considered a top tier college coach and is currently in an ideal position with the Tar Heels. Although taking Lakers job would be appealing, the 63-year-old seems content with staying at Chapel Hill. Williams said the following about the Lakers and Mitch Kupchak on Fox Sports Radio via Sports Xchange:

“I’ve always felt like that I’m a college coach and that’s where I belong,” Williams said on FOX Sports Radio on Wednesday. “(Lakers general manager) Mitch Kupchak is one of my best friends in the whole wide world, there’s no question there, but I’m a college guy and if somebody calls and offers me the greatest job in the world, it better be really good because I feel like I’ve got about the greatest job in the world.”

Although Williams made it clear that he believes he’s a “college coach,” the leader on the sidelines for North Carolina seems to have left the door open by saying the offer “better be really good” in order to leave the Tar Heels.

Williams isn’t the only college coach getting consideration from the Lakers. The storied franchise has also been linked to John Calipari (Kentucky), Kevin Ollie (UConn) and Mike Krzyzewski (Duke).

Among NBA head coaches rumored to be candidates are Byron Scott, George Karl, Jeff Van Gundy, Lionel Hollins, Steve Kerr and Tom Thibodeau.

The Lakers will likely continue to weigh their options moving forward. The team’s top candidates may start to be more clear following the NBA draft lottery (May 20) and leading up to the NBA draft on June 26.
