Nickey Van Exel, the son of the former starting point guard for the Lakers, Nick Van Exel, arrested on Wednesday night and has been charged with capital murder. Formally charged on Thursday, it has been reported that the younger Van Exel was jailed on $1 million bail in Dallas, Texas.

Additionally, the victim, Bradley Bassey Eyo, 23, was Van Exel’s neighbor and supposedly his good friend. He was found on Sunday with a gunshot wound to chest.

According to Van Exel’s lawyer, Bassey and Van Exel were fooling around with a shotgun when Bassey was shot. Van Exel claimed to not know that the gun, which was owned by his stepfather, was loaded.

The elder Van Exel was drafted by the Lakers with the 37th pick in the 1993 NBA draft, played with them from 1993-1998 and was an all-star during the 98 season.
