Our Lakers Nation top moments in history continue with the sixth player to have his Lakers jersey hanging in the rafters, “Big Game James” Worthy.
Prior to his days as an analyst on Time Warner Cable SportsNet, Worthy spent 12 years with the Los Angeles Lakers, finishing with three NBA championships and an NBA Finals MVP award.
Worthy’s best moments came through in the clutch, during the NBA playoffs and NBA Finals and usually against their biggest rival, the Boston Celtics. Remember that facial over Cedric Maxwell in Game 2 of the 1984 NBA Finals? What about Game 1 of the 1987 NBA Finals against the Celtics when Worthy poured in 33 points and nine rebounds to get the Lakers another NBA championship?
If you don’t remember Worthy’s performance in Game 7 of the 1988 NBA Finals against the Detroit Pistons, it will forever go down as one of the greatest moments in Worthy’s career. Let’s just say Worthy put up his only triple double of his career in that game. It’s no surprise why Magic Johnson once said he was one of the top five players in playoff history. Worthy averaged more points per game in the playoffs than he did in the regular season.
Hike up those short shorts from the 1980s, fasten your Worthy goggles and take a ride with us through the top Lakers moments in Worthy’s career.
