Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had finally retired as the 1989-90 Los Angeles Lakers looked to remain competitive with Magic Johnson and James Worthy at the helm. During the regular season, this plan worked splendidly, as L.A. went 63-19 to secure the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

However, by the time the playoffs came around, there was just nothing left in the tank from such a talented roster. They survived the first round, but were swiftly eliminated by the Phoenix Suns in the second round. Meanwhile, the Portland Trail Blazers found their way to the Finals after an excellent 59-23 season.

In the Eastern Conference, it was a two-team race between the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls. Michael Jordan did everything he could, but Scottie Pippen was simply not ready to take the next step and the Pistons ended up in the Finals again.

In their third straight appearance, the Pistons took care of the Trail Blazers with ease, winning it all for the second year in a row.
