With the Phoenix Suns’ victory on Thursday night, the Los Angeles Lakers officially have the second worst record in the NBA, giving them a 56% shot at keeping their pick should the standings hold. If the Lakers are able to keep their pick, they will have a shot at drafting another potential superstar.
Most executives are calling this draft class the best since 2003, with Washington’s Markelle Fultz and UCLA’s Lonzo Ball leading the pack. Head coach Luke Walton was in attendance to see Ball play on Tuesday, a player the Lakers could end up with should they get a top-two pick come June.
In recent weeks, Ball’s father, LaVar, has gone on quite a talking spree. He has said that Lonzo will be better than reigning two-time MVP Stephen Curry, and recently said Lonzo would only play for the Lakers. He retracted those comments, but said he wants Lonzo on the Lakers to learn from Magic Johnson. The Lakers and Lonzo seem on a course destined for each other, as long as the ping-pong balls fall the right way.
Lonzo would be a great addition to the team, but the last thing the Lakers need is more distractions off the court, something LaVar Ball might bring.
