The Los Angeles Lakers have a young superstar to build around moving forward as they inked Luka Doncic to a three-year contract extension on Saturday morning. The deal is reportedly for $165 million and includes a player option in the final season, which will give him the opportunity to opt out in the summer of 2028 and sign a massive five-year, $417 million contract.
Doncic immediately embraced being a Laker after being traded from the Dallas Mavericks last season and has said multiple times that he has no plans of leaving L.A. He made good on that by signing this extension and expressed his excitement to stay with the purple and gold long-term.
“I’m really grateful to the Lakers organization, my teammates and the fans for welcoming me and my family with so much support and kindness since day one,” said Doncic in a statement. “This is an amazing organization, and I truly believe in what we’re building together. I’m going to keep working as hard as I can to bring another championship to Los Angeles and to make Laker Nation proud. This is just the beginning. I’m excited for what’s ahead and to keep building something special with this team.”
Doncic also took to social media to announce the extension and express his excitement:

Doncic and the Lakers are aligned on their desire to bring championships back to L.A., which hasn’t happened in five years.
Even if it doesn’t happen this upcoming season though, the Lakers know they have Doncic locked up for at least a few more seasons, which should allow the front office to build a roster that can compete in the present and long term. To Doncic’s credit, he has made good on every promise he’s made since the trade and seems to be happy to usher in a new era of Lakers basketball.
Luka Doncic transformed body to get ‘fresh start’
The Lakers have to feel good about giving Luka Doncic this extension considering he completely transformed his body this offseason and is in great shape. When asked why he chose to do that now, Doncic said it had to do with wanting to get a fresh start after the mid-season trade from the Mavericks.
