At this point, the only thing that can stop Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic from scoring is himself and his availability.
While Doncic has been on a historic scoring streak the past month, he has also been sitting on 15 technical fouls. Doncic nearly was suspended for collecting a 16th technical, but fortunately had it rescinded by the NBA.
However, Doncic faces suspension again after being assessed a technical foul against the Brooklyn Nets. After the game, Doncic wasn’t happy with the call and believes the technical was unwarranted.
“He was yelling in my face three times, I just wanted to get out of there. It’s a double tech, of course…What can I say? I didn’t even talk, I just wanted to get out of there,” Doncic said. “They said my push was exaggerated which it obviously was not. I don’t know what else to say.”
Doncic got called for the technical after some back and forth with Ziaire Willams in the third quarter. Williams talked to Doncic and got close to him, prompting the latter to shove him out of the way. Williams retaliated by hitting Doncic near the face and the officials called the double technical foul shortly after.
If this technical is upheld, Doncic will be suspended for the Lakers game on Monday against the Washington Wizards. Even though Doncic may not have said much to Williams, the two chirping at each other and the physical contact might make it hard to overturn.
Losing Doncic for Monday’s tilt would be a blow for Los Angeles despite Washington’s paltry record. Doncic has been at the forefront of the team’s success in March, so him missing a game could make things harder than they need to be when the Wizards visit.
To Doncic’s credit, he has been better about not complaining to officials after picking up his fifteenth technical. The next thing he’ll need to watch out for is jawing at opponents who are talking trash to him.
It doesn’t take much to get Doncic going on the floor, though he has to be smart moving forward as the purple and gold can’t afford to have him missing games down the stretch.
