For as much as Rui Hachimura’s star has grown since becoming a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, he is an even bigger star in his home country of Japan. Hachimura was born in Toyama and is the first Japanese-born player to ever play in the NBA.

Now, Hachimura is set to give back to the youth basketball scene in Asia as the Lakers forward is set to participate in the upcoming NBA Rising Stars Invitational in Singapore, via NBA Japan:

The Rising Stars Invitational is a high school basketball tournament that will feature some of the best teams the area has to offer. It takes place from June 23-28 and Hachimura, along with a couple of former Lakers guards in Mitch Richmond and Jeremy Lin, as well as Australian women’s basketball star and Hall of Famer Lauren Jackson, will be taking part in different events throughout the week.

The events include fan meet-and-greet sessions, a coaches clinic on June 24, and a series of community programs, including a Her Time To Play clinic and leadership panel, as well as Jr. NBA and Jr. WNBA clinics. It will be a great opportunity for Hachimura to interact and inspire the next generation of young athletes prior to him really having big decisions to make for his own career this summer.

Hachimura is an unrestricted free agent this offseason and is coming off an outstanding year run with the Lakers in which he made history with his shooting performances. The forward set a Lakers’ franchise record for 3-point percentage in the regular season, and then stepped up even more in the playoffs, raising his scoring average significantly while shooting a ridiculous 56.9% from deep and setting more history along the way.

Whether or not Hachimura remains with the Lakers next season is unclear as the franchise has a lot of decisions to make in free agency this summer and he will likely command a raise from his previous deal. But regardless of all of that, he will undoubtedly enjoy his time teaching and helping the youth in Singapore.

Lakers coach JJ Redick happy for Rui Hachimura’s success

Hachimura has been experiencing the greatest success of his career and one person who is very happy at seeing it all is Lakers head coach JJ Redick.
