Luka Doncic spent the 2025-26 season changing the conversation around his defense, but he did not fully erase it. He gave the Lakers real production on that end, reached a major steals milestone, and still left enough doubt for critics to argue that the reputation has not caught up to the numbers.

That tension made his season worth a closer look. The hype around his EuroBasket run, the rise in his defensive activity, and the continued skepticism from outside observers all pointed in different directions. The truth sat somewhere in the middle.

EuroBasket Changed The Mood

Dončić entered the summer with a different kind of defensive buzz after EuroBasket. He looked more active, more engaged, and more willing to create disruption away from the ball.

That mattered because EuroBasket does not reward empty effort. It exposed players in a competitive setting where anticipation, positioning, and hand activity can swing games. Dončić showed enough of all three to make people take a fresh look at his defense.

APK 1xBet style prop discussion followed that surge in attention. When a star starts forcing turnovers and stacking steals, bettors notice fast. The market never decides the truth on its own, but it does show where the conversation is heading.

What Changed In Los Angeles

The regular season gave the Lakers a more complete version of the same story. Doncic was not suddenly a lockdown defender. He was, however, more disruptive and more consistent than his old reputation suggested.

He reached 100 steals on March 28, becoming the first Laker to hit that mark since Kobe Bryant in 2012-13. He also became the only player in the league to pair a 30-point scoring average with 100 or more steals, which is a rare combination for any player, let alone one who still gets labeled a defensive liability.

That is the kind of production that changes how a team can use him. It does not make him a stopper on the perimeter, but it does mean opponents have to respect his hands, his timing, and his ability to generate live-ball turnovers.

The Numbers Still Tell Two Stories

Dončić’s season still carried the same split that has followed him for years. The raw numbers pointed to real defensive value. The broader scouting profile still leaned on questions about his foot speed and consistency.

In Dallas, he had already shown seasons in which his steals climbed, and his defensive rating improved enough to suggest progress. In Los Angeles, that trend continued. The Lakers saw more effort, more anticipation, and more plays in which he contributed on defense without taking away from his main job as an engine on offense.

But context matters. A few good stretches do not erase the film from previous seasons, and a handful of highlight plays do not create a new identity overnight. That is why the debate keeps going even as the stats improve.

Why The Reputation Lagged

The gap between performance and perception stayed wide because defense is harder to brand than scoring. Fans remember the missed rotation. Coaches remember the late closeout. Voters remember the big moments.

Dončić did enough to make the old label feel outdated, but not enough to completely replace it. That is a better place to be than where he started, yet it still leaves room for skepticism.

The Lakers can live with that. They do not need him to become a candidate for an all-defense team. They need him to stay active, stay engaged, and create enough pressure on the ball to support the system around him.

What Comes After the Summer

The bigger question now is whether this becomes a baseline or a one-season spike. If Dončić carries this level of activity forward, the Lakers get more than an elite scorer. They get a more complete star who can influence games in multiple ways.

That is also why the 1xBet conversation around his props keeps growing. When a player affects scoring, assists, rebounds, and steals at a high level, every category becomes part of the same story. Doncic has reached that point.

The headline is simple. He has not solved every defensive concern, but he has done enough to make the old version of the narrative feel stale. For the Lakers, that is a meaningful step.
