Exactly how the Los Angeles Lakers’ rotation will look this season with so many new faces on the roster is unclear. But one intriguing player who could play a big role, and perhaps even be a starter on this team is forward Ziaire Williams.

Even though he has been in the NBA for five years, Williams is still just 25 years old and has steadily improved every season since joining the league. Now in his return home to Southern California, Williams is looking to make a big impact for the Lakers and he spoke about what he has been working on this offseason, via Ryan Ward on SI:

“Definitely first and foremost, getting stronger, making sure my body is right. I feel like availability is the best ability.

“Bulletproofing in my body, armoring up for the long season plus playoffs. Just keeping the game simple, being more efficient with my shooting, finishing at the rim, making closeout reads and simplifying the game.

“Six years in, I kind of know where I thrive and what I need to get better, and where my spots will be out on the court. Fine-tuning certain things.”

Williams is right in that being available is the most important thing, and that has been something of an issue for him throughout his career. Though rarely dealing with anything major, he has had numerous minor issues and has played in more than 60 games just twice in five years.

But assuming all of that is behind him, Williams has all the tools to be a very good two-way player for the Lakers. He has the length and athleticism to defend multiple positions and getting stronger will allow him to better defend those bigger wings and forwards.

Getting his outside shot a bit more consistent will be important as he is just a 32.2% shooter from deep in his career, though he shot a career-high 34.3% last season. But Williams also has a good understanding of his role, the things he is good at and where he can thrive. And if he can lock in on those things he could be a surprise hit for the Lakers this year.

Ziaire Williams discusses possibility of starting for Lakers this season

Most have a general idea of what the Lakers starting lineup could look like this season, but the fifth spot is up in the air and Williams believes he has an opportunity to claim that spot.
