Ten Years Ago Today, Robert Horry Saved the Day

It’s been a good day to recollect famous Laker buzzer-beaters. After discussing Derek Fisher’s famous fling in the 2004 Western Conference Semi-Finals, it was brought to my attention from Twitter user @ajsturman that today marks the 10-year anniversary of Robert Horry’s buzzer beating three-pointer that sunk the Kings in Game 4 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals.

With the Lakers trailing 2-1 in the series to the Kings, a loss to Sacramento in Game 4 would have put them in a 3-1 hole, all but eliminating their three-peat hopes. But a furious comeback had the Lakers down two with time running out. Missed shots from Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal resulted in Kings’ center Vlade Divac hitting the ball out to Horry, who sank the three as time expired, giving the Lakers the victory.

The Lakers went on to defeat the Kings in seven games, and won their third straight NBA championship just two weeks later.
