The Los Angeles Lakers have title aspirations for the 2012-13 season, but injuries can thwart any chances of winning a championship.

The Lakers have only won one game this season, and to make things worse, Steve Nash will be sidelined for a week or more due to a fracture in his left fibula. Even though the Lakers are in urgent need of a victory, coach Mike Brown does not want to rush the rehab process for Steve Nash. Brown spoke SportingNews and talked about how the team is approaching the setback.

“You obviously hope he’s back as soon as possible,” Brown said Sunday. “But the one thing you don’t want to do, you don’t want to compromise his long-term health for him coming back quicker than he should. So, (trainer) Gary Vitti and the staff are on top of it. We’ll just wait and play it out from there.”

Nash will be out for at least a week, but don’t be surprised if the process takes longer than expected. Nash is in his late thirties and his body doesn’t heal as fast as it use to. He injured his left fibula during the Lakers’ game during the Blazers and did not return to the court. Los Angeles ended up losing, but they had bigger concerns heading back to the locker room.

The Lakers are making the right choice in taking their time with the Nash injury. There is no need to risk his future health to break this current losing slump. Los Angeles is capable of winning with Nash out of the lineup, as they proved Sunday night, but some players will have to step up and fill the void. If this team wants to be last one standing in June, it has to be able to fight through injuries and setbacks.
