For the first time in the history of the National Basketball Association, a player has been fined for flopping in a game.
Prior to the start of the 2012-13 season, the NBA announced that it will begin punishing players for exaggerating contact so a call goes in their favor. Brooklyn Nets forward Reggie Evans was one of the main “stars” in the league’s instructional video about the new flopping rule, and he is turned out to be the first one fined.
The New York Post reports that Evans will be fined $5,000 for the flop he conducted in the third quarter of the Nets-Lakers game.
The Nets’ backup power forward was fined $5,000 after he committed his second flop of the season in the third quarter of Tuesday night’s 95-90 loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles, when he clearly exaggerated contact from Lakers forward Metta World Peace.
With the flopping rule, players will be warned for their first offense, but if they flop even after the warning, fines will be issued out. The second offense calls for a $5,000 fine, third will be a $10,000 fine, fourth will result in a $15,000 fine, fifth will be a $30,000 fine and the sixth offense could end in a fine or a suspension.
