Lakers News: Lakers’ Trade Exception For Christian Eygena Expires

Christian EyengaThe final piece of the Dwightmare puzzle has officially been put to rest.

The Los Angeles Lakers let their trade exception for Christian Eygena expire on Monday according to Eric Pincus of the L.A. Times:

The team’s $1.2-million trade exception for Christian Eyenga, a throw-in to the Orlando Magic as part of the four-team trade, expired a full year after the initial blockbuster deal.

The Lakers would have been able to acquire a player in trade, making up to $1.3 million (the Eyenga exception, plus the padding of $100,000 allowed by the league), without sending out any players to match salary.

Eyenga was nothing more than a throw-in in this blockbuster deal giving the Lakers a small trade exception. Even though the Lakers could have added another player with the exception, it was expected to expire without the team making a move.

The 24-year-old forward didn’t play a single game for the Magic last season, becoming a regular on the Texas Legends D-League squad. Eyenga recently signed with Stelmet Zielona Góra in Poland.

Although the Magic have clearly gotten the better end of the deal at this point in time, Orlando initially appeared to have gotten the short end of the stick in this deal with players like Eyenga and Josh McRoberts in return from the Lakers. Orlando also received draft picks, Arron Afflalo and Al Harrington in the deal.

With Dwight officially leaving Los Angeles in favor of the Houston Rockets, the Lakers are left with nothing. Not only did Dwight leave Los Angeles, but so did Earl Clark. The veteran forward was considered a throw-in, much like Eygena, and turned out to be one of the best role players on the team last season.

Instead of re-signing with the Lakers at a discount, Clark chose to reunite with head coach Mike Brown and the Cleveland Cavaliers on a two-year deal worth around $9 million.
