Last Season Summary:
There isn’t a lot of information or game tape on Nick Minnerath. He was a largely unknown forward from a mid-major in college. Minnerath’s final season at Detroit College saw him improve his per game numbers across the board, but saw his shooting percentages come down across the board. His one year in college isn’t why he’s gotten a look with the Lakers, but more because of his work with the Kings Summer League team. He didn’t really put up any eye-popping numbers, but he worked hard enough and was surprisingly athletic.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
As mentioned above, because there isn’t much tape on Minnerath, it’s hard to give any kind of definitive answer here, but we do know that he has been able to shoot with regular success from behind the three point line. Minnerath shot over 40 percent from three in his second year at Detroit University and shot 35.9 percent last season. Over the course of his career, he shot 39 percent from three. Another thing that has stood about Minnerath is his shocking athleticism. This video provided by SLAM Online features a series of dunks, blocks and alley-oops from Minnerath. One would have to assume that his weaknesses are on the defensive end of the floor since that’s really the only aspect of his game you won’t read much about.
Expected Role:
Should Minnerath make the team, he’ll likely have a spot at the end of the bench. The minutes that he does see will likely feature him along the perimeter, stretching the floor and creating space for more equipped shooters. Most of his looks will likely come from the corners in D’Antoni’s offense (think a role similar to Metta World Peace with less dribbling and post play). This being said, it’s unlikely that Minnerath will remain with the team following training camp and preseason.
This Year’s Expectations:
There really are no expectations. Minnerath is an undrafted rookie out of a college that isn’t exactly a household name. His camp invite largely came out of nowhere, and should he make the team, it will come as a surprise to many. Minnerath isn’t a guy who you can expect to see in a Lakers jersey this season.
