Kobe Bryant Travels To Germany To Have Plasma Therapy On Knee

According to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, Kobe Bryant is heading back to Germany for a second round of platelet-rich plasma therapy. This is the same procedure that Bryant underwent in the summer of 2011.

The procedure was described by ESPNLA back in July of 2011.

The procedure, called platelet-rich plasma therapy, consists of centrifuging the patient’s blood to isolate platelets and growth factors. The mix is then injected into the injured area to accelerate healing. The concentrated growth factors have been shown to speed tissue growth and healing in surgically created lesions in lab animals.

Other athletes like Tiger Woods and Cliff Lee have undergone the procedure. The procedure needs little recovery time and does not restrict movement in any way because it’s not very invasive.

After the surgery, Bryant saw an increase in activity in the 2011-12 season. His usage percentage was north of 35 percent, the second highest of his career, only trailing the 2005-06 season when he averaged a career high 35 points per game.

As mentioned in an earlier post, Bryant is expected to return to the Lakers at some point next week.
