Lakers Rumors: Are The Lakers Targeting Shannon Brown?

Yesterday, the Washington Wizards sent Omeka Okafor and picks for Marcin Gortat, Shannon Brown, Kendall Marshall and Malcolm Lee. The move was mutually beneficial for both teams as the Wizards got the productive big that they’ve needed while the Suns have stacked up more picks for next year’s stacked NBA draft (not to mention that they’ve shredded more talent to ensure that, at the very least, their own draft pick is a good one).

The Wizards only wanted Gortat out of the deal, and are expected to release the other guys included in the deal, according to Steve Kyler. With that news, many wondered what would happen with Brown, and the Lakers could be interested in his services.

Bringing in Brown has its pros and cons. Brown is an athletic wing who could potentially thrive with the playing style that the Lakers second unit has shown in the previous two games against the Jazz. Brown’s athleticism and youth is something that the Lakers have coveted since the release of Dwight Howard, and Brown fits that mold.

Brown will also come on the cheap and would have to be a minimum deal. However, Brown doesn’t necessarily bring anything to the team that the Lakers don’t already have on their roster. Xavier Henry has a similar game to Brown’s, with both Wes Johnson and Nick Young having some of his skill sets as well.

For a team pinching pennies this season, it wouldn’t make sense to release any of the guys who have partially guaranteed deals to bring in a guy who won’t add too much to the team. Brown could add some depth for a back court that struggled with injuries last season, but other than that, there isn’t much upside to the Lakers bringing him back.
