Following a loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night, Pau Gasol spoke to the media in the locker room at Phillips Arena. Gasol arguably had his best performance in quite some time with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but his teammate Kobe Bryant didn’t fair as well in his fifth game back from injury.

Gasol talked about his longtime teammate’s effort saying the following about the five-time NBA champion via Time Warner Cable SportsNet:

“I see him trying. That’s all. I don’t know how he feels. He’s trying his hardest.”

In a season-high 32 minutes against the Hawks, Bryant scored only eight points on 4-of-14 shooting from the floor. Along with the rough night shooting the basketball, the veteran guard continued to turn the ball over with a game-high five turnovers.

Although Bryant has only played in five games thus far, this is the beginning of a second series of a back-to-back. Things will get even more difficult for the veteran against the Memphis Grizzlies on the road tomorrow night.

Fortunately, the Lakers received some good news on Monday learning that Jordan Farmar might be back sooner than expected. Bryant has shouldered the load at the point guard position, following Steve Blake’s injury, which left the Lakers without a healthy floor general.

With Bryant playing out of position, he’s struggled to initiate the offense in four out the first five games for the Lakers. Turnovers have been a persistent problem with the superstar who is forcing passes and clearly finding it difficult to adjust to a different role, especially coming fresh off the worst injury of his career.
