There continues to be a lot of moving parts at the top of the Los Angeles Lakers as the sale of the majority shares of the team from Mark Walter to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger pushes forward. Then, of course, there is the ongoing drama between the Buss siblings and whether they will be able to sell off their minority stake as Jeanie Buss pushes back against that.
One concern with all of this is whether it could affect the product on the court and if players even care about all of the ownership drama. One person who believe it does matter is former Lakers player, and Spectrum SportsNet analyst, Danny Green.
“I think it matters,” Green said on an episode of Byron Scott’s Fast Break. “I think for a lot of guys now that aren’t in the organization as much don’t care as much as when they were playing. Of course it matters when you’re playing. I’m still around the team, I still work with the team with Spectrum SportsNet, so I’m there. So it definitely matters. You can feel a difference, even in the media and aura around the building, the organization. So yeah, it matters, but in the same breath, you just want things, whatever is going on, to be handled smoothly and you just hope for the best outcome.
“Again, I never thought that the Buss family would give it up. It’s kind of a crazy turnaround that it’s been given up twice already in the last two years. But we’ve seen stranger things in this world. Not a lot surprises us. You just want owners that are in this league that care about the game and not just about making a buck or the other stuff that doesn’t really matter. The owners that actually want to be around, be at the games, care to build their teams, and put money in the team.”
As Green said, it is important that things get handled smoothly. Considering the current legal drama between Jeanie and the Buss siblings, it isn’t necessarily the smoothest right now, but perhaps they will be able to come to an agreement soon and things can be resolved amicably.
And in the end, it is about having owners who care about the team and the game of basketball and want to win and put the money into the team to make that happen. If Kushner and Iger are those types of owners then the Lakers, from the top down to the staff and players and even the fans, will all be happy.

There is beginning to be more clarity on how things will operate under the new Lakers owners as it is expected that Kushner will be the sole controlling shareholder of the franchise while Iger will be a minority owner.
