One of the focuses for the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason was building out their front office staff and expanding multiple departments throughout the franchise. In comparison to other teams around the league, the Lakers’ front office staff was pretty bare bones and in order to improve this franchise on all levels, they needed to grow.
The Lakers spoke about wanting to hire two assistant general managers to operate under general manager Rob Pelinka and they quickly hired Rohan Ramadas to head the analytics department. However, following that it was mostly quiet on the hiring front.
The surprising sale of the Lakers from Mark Walter to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger only further complicated things, along with the ongoing legal battle between Jeanie Buss and her siblings over wanting to sell their remaining minority shares. In fact, it was believed by some that there was something of a hiring freeze for high-ranking positions within the Lakers organization until everything was more settled on the ownership front.
However, the Lakers recently announced the hiring of Eric Amsler as the team’s new assistant GM in charge of player personnel. And with that announcement came another, with Keith D’Amelio being hired as the Lakers’ new Director of Integrated Performance Systems.
Who is new Lakers Director of Integrated Performance Systems Keith D’Amelio?
D’Amelio has spent more than 25 years in the sports world with tenures with franchises such as the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors of the NBA, New York Liberty of the WNBA and the Stanford University Men’s Basketball program, as well as having collaborated with the NFL, MLB, English Premier League and Australian Football League.
His time with the Raptors and at Stanford saw him catalyzing widespread adoption of cutting-edge approaches and technology integrations that have since become industry standard. With the Liberty he worked in basketball operations, health and performance, analytics and applied science.
D’Amelio also spent 13 years with Nike where he was the Director of Athlete Performance. While there, he developed and lead Nike’s approach to supporting their athletes and contracted teams and transformative initiatives across the company. He also helped to drive tangible advancements in health and performance outcomes for individual athletes and teams alike.
D’Amelio earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from Arizona State University and his Master’s in Exercise Science from California University at Pennsylvania. He also received his Doctorate’s in Applied Sports Science from the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia in 2020.
