With the 2014-15 regular season two weeks away, the NBA and its fans were dealt a tough blow on Sunday morning as the Oklahoma City Thunder announced Kevin Durant will miss 6-8 weeks with a Jones fracture:

“After practice yesterday, Kevin made us aware of discomfort in his right foot. We proceeded to perform the necessary imaging studies to determine the cause of his discomfort. At this stage, Kevin has been diagnosed with a Jones fracture. Traditional treatment of this injury requires a surgical procedure and recent NBA cases have resulted in a return to play in 6-8 weeks. We are in the process of collaboratively evaluating the most appropriate next steps with Kevin, his representatives, and Thunder medical personnel. Until a course of action is determined, we are unable to provide a timeline specific to Kevin’s case.”

In Durant’s five seasons so far, he has only missed six games and has led the NBA in games (388), minutes (15,064) and points (15,064) according to ESPN Stats & Info. With last season’s MVP expected to miss 6-8 weeks, he could miss approximately 30 games for the Thunder.

Considered one of the two best players in the NBA, the Lakers are rumored to maintain financial flexibility in hopes of signing Durant in the 2016 off-season. While those chances are slim, the NBA’s new TV deal could provide an intriguing situation for Durant in Los Angeles should he decided to leave Oklahoma City.
