Kobe On Dwight Howard: “I’m Trying To Bring Out The Best In Him”

1kobedhA lot has been made of the relationship between Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard this season. With Bryant playing the role of the aging veteran and Howard coming in as the new kid on the block looking to establish his dominance on a new team, things haven’t exactly transitioned smoothly so far. There have been multiple reports of the two star players not getting along, and some believe it’s hurt team chemistry.

In an upcoming interview on Time Warner Cable SportsNet’s Connected with Kobe Bryant, the 17-year veteran talks about his relationship with Howard.

“It’s like a relationship with your brother. I am trying to bring the best out of him.”

Looking back on the season, that could certainly be recognized. Bryant, who’s admittedly hard on his teammates, has a unique style that rubs certain players the wrong way. His intense behavior can be alarming for those that aren’t accustomed to it. Howard, who spent his time in Orlando as the top dog, suddenly found himself as co-captain while Bryant manned the helm of the ship.

While rumors have swirled all season concerning the relationship, or lack thereof, between Kobe and Dwight, it has seemed that things have improved lately. Once the All-Star break passed, things seemed to improve leaps and bounds between the two players.

Regardless, while Bryant is doing whatever he can to prepare Dwight to take the reigns once his career comes to an end, the older/younger brother dynamic is something that makes sense. As the oldest of three boys, I completely understand where Kobe’s coming from. The ‘tough love’ strategy is common amongst brothers, and ultimately Howard will (most likely) be better off because of Bryant’s guidance.
