Lakers News: Buss Family To Executive Produce Showtime Series

Jeanie Buss and Phil JacksonThroughout the years, the Lakers have always been a franchise that stays in the news. From Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe to Phil Jackson Books to Dwight Howard, there has always been a level of drama surrounding the Lakers franchise. In the entertainment capital of the world, it would make sense that the the Lakers would be the sports world’s biggest soap opera.

With the number of story lines constantly surrounding the Lakers at any point of the year, it was only a matter of time that someone would capitalize off of the spectacle that is the Lakers. Ron Shelton and the Showtime network are planning on putting together a series of hour-long episodes that would be based on the Lakers family running the organization, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Showtime could be taking it to the courts with their next drama. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the cable network is developing a one-hour drama focused on a professional basketball team.

Set to write, executive produce and, should it go to pilot, direct is Ron Shelton. The sports-centric filmmaker’s most notable movies include Bull Durham, Tin Cup and White Men Can’t Jump. Serving as executive producers alongside him on the project are several members of the L.A. Lakers family, including assistant coach Kurt Rambis, retired coach Phil Jackson and team execs Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis — the latter two doing so under their shingle Street Reason Entertainment.

Ron Shelton is most famous for directing White Men Can’t Jump and Bull Durham, two of the most memorable sports movies. The series is currently untitled, but will be a behind-the-scenes look at a professional sports team.

Last year, TWC, the Lakers new network, will also continue with their Backstage Lakers show, which gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the Lakers players at the season progresses.
