Lakers News: Dwight Howard Doesn’t Need Shoulder Surgery

Dwight HowardAfter dealing with an injured shoulder all season, Dwight Howard has been seeking medical advice to try and figure out what he’s going to do in the off-season. Some were thinking he might need to undergo surgery to repair the torn labrum he suffered earlier in the season and re-aggravated more than once.

Fortunately for Dwight, the superstar center will not be undergoing surgery heading into the NBA off-season for a second consecutive year. Although Dwight won’t be on the operating table due to the injured shoulder, the perennial All-Star will attempt to get his body back to form over the course of the summer while considering his immediate future in free agency.

As of right now, the consensus seems to be that Dwight will re-sign with the Lakers rather than leaving $30 million on the table in order to potentially sign elsewhere, but speculation continues heading into the off-season.

Here’s the complete press release from the Lakers and posted to the official team Twitter account;

EL SEGUNDO — Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard, who was diagnosed with a torn labrum after originally injuring his right shoulder on January 4th against the Clippers, was examined today by Dr. James Tibone of the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Group.

Howard, who missed six games this season due to the injury, was advised that surgery is not necessary at this time.

In 76 games this season, Howard averaged 17.1 points, a league-high 12.4 rebounds and 2.45 blocks in 35.8 minutes, while finishing second league-wide with a .578 field goal percentage.
