As LeBron James mulls his future, whether he wants to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, sign elsewhere, or step away from basketball, he knows his worth.
James is coming off a season where he embraced being a third option behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. But he knows what he has to do to succeed at this stage of his career and the four-time champion does not believe he needs to prove anything else other than competing for more titles.
“No. I mean, I did it this year,” James said after the Lakers were eliminated. “There’s nothing I need to show in this league. As far as I want to show people I can do this, or show myself that I can do this, I’ve done it all and seen it all. Just being able to compete and trying to win championships, I think that’s a motivating factor. It’s always been ever since I touched the postseason in ’06. It was, ‘How can I compete for a championship?’
“When I touched the postseason it was, ‘This is something I want to be a part of for a long time.’ And obviously I’ve had some success throughout the postseason in my career. But as far as me individually, no. No.”
For a player with a laundry list of accomplishments, there is no need for James to prove anything else at this stage of his career. But the Lakers star clearly still wants to try and win a championship before he decides to call it a career.
Doncic shares a similar mindset to James by wanting to win his elusive first title after making it to the NBA Finals in 2024. While signs are pointing to James returning to L.A., he will be waiting to see what moves general manager Rob Pelinka makes to propel the team to contention before making any decisions.
Donovan Mitchell declines comment on potential LeBron James return to Cavaliers
For the first time since 2018, LeBron James is a free agent and a logical landing spot is the team that drafted him, the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland flamed out in the Eastern Conference Finals and are looking to cash in on a championship with Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.
Since the Cavaliers are a second apron team, James would need to sign for a veteran minimum unless they make some other moves to open up more space. Mitchell was asked about the speculation surrounding the Ohio native coming home again, but he declined to comment.
