The Lakers announced today that back-up point guard Jordan Farmar has a moderately torn hamstring, and is going to miss at least four weeks of playing time in order to let the injury heal.

Farmar injured himself in the Lakers 114-108 loss last night against the Portland Trailblazers. He had only been in the game for a little over a minute. After the game Farmar indicated to Lakers sideline reporter Mike Trudell  that his hamstring had been tight for a few days, and the he knew right away that something was wrong when he tweaked it.

His goal was to not miss any time, and he let reporters know that he believed the injury wasn’t too serious, however, this one month prognosis says differently.

The Lakers are now in an unfortunate position, as one of their key contributors in their second unit is going to be out for an extended period of time. Last night we saw Mike D’Antoni give Xavier Henry and Jodie Meeks some time at the point guard position, and while they showed some decent ability to handle the ball, they failed to create for others, and that’s what makes Farmar such a unique fit for this team.

The best that Lakers fans can hope for is that Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash are close to returning, because their services are going to be needed soon if the Lakers don’t want to fall into a slump. Until then we should expect Steve Blake to get the majority of the minutes at the point guard position as he continues to flourish in Coach D’Antoni’s up-tempo offense.
