This offseason the Los Angeles Lakers are undergoing a major overhaul. With new owner Mark Walter now in charge there have been front office changes as well as improvements in facilities, not to mention the Lakers’ roster itself, which will look completely different from a season ago.
The coaching staff is also seeing a change as well with the Lakers’ G League head coach Zach Guthrie being promoted to assistant coach and head of player development on head coach JJ Redick’s staff, via Shams Charania of ESPN:
The Los Angeles Lakers are promoting South Bay coach Zach Guthrie to a Lakers assistant coach and head of player development on JJ Redick's staff, sources tell ESPN. Guthrie guided South Bay to the G League's best record last season.

Guthrie has been leading the Lakers’ G League affiliate since 2024 and is coming off an excellent season in which he led South Bay to a 26-10 record, the best in the Western Conference, and a trip to the G League Western Conference Finals.
Guthrie being in charge of player development is also an extremely important role as that is an important piece of this franchise’s infrastructure going forward. While in the G League, he has done an excellent job of helping young players grow. This past season, that was notable with players such as Kobe Bufkin earning a standard contract with the Lakers, and Drew Timme and Chris Mañon earning two-way deals.
Getting the most out of young talent will be crucial as the Lakers move forward. Rookie guard Cameron Carr and second-year forward Adou Thiero are both extremely talented players who could make an impact for this team while two-way players such as Mañon, AK Okereke and Peter Suder could potentially grow into contributors as well.
This is an excellent opportunity for Guthrie who has been climbing the assistant ranks since 2016 and now will be an important part of this Lakers coaching staff under Redick.
LeBron James shows love to Lakers organization, staff and former teammates
The Lakers are truly beginning a new era this season with Luka Doncic now being the clear face of the franchise and LeBron James choosing to continue his career elsewhere after eight seasons with the franchise. And during his appearance at Fanatics Fest NYC, James showed a ton of love to the organization as a whole from top to bottom.
