Unfortunately, Luka Doncic’s season was cut short due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain after having an MVP-caliber year. The Los Angeles Lakers went on a playoff run without their best player and still advanced past the Houston Rockets in six games before falling to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round.
Fortunately, Doncic did not try to rush back from this injury, which allows him to spend this offseason fully healthy. As the Slovenian star enjoys his summer, he decided to travel to England to catch the 154th Open at Royal Birkdale, golf’s original major championship. During his trip, The Open released a video of Doncic making the rounds around the event, leading to him meeting golfer Scottie Scheffler:
Scheffler is from the Dallas area and watched Doncic’s tenure with the Dallas Mavericks. So, there was mutual respect and fandom for one another before meeting.
The Lakers star recently took up golf thanks to teammate Austin Reaves and now former teammate LeBron James. Also, head coach JJ Redick dabbles, so L.A. possesses some golfers and they used that as a way to do team bonding during last season.
All of James, Doncic and Reaves have noted how peaceful a sport golf is due to being out in nature, not having to worry about outside noise. Although, it does require a lot of time invested to get better at and the 27-year-old has some time this offseason to work on his game to compete with his backcourt mate, who projects to be the best golfer on the team.
Once this upcoming NBA season kicks off, both Reaves and Doncic will provide updates on their respective golf games along with any matches they have against one another. But it is good to see the MVP candidate get out, spend time away from basketball and enjoy his summer before a critical year ahead.
Luka Doncic makes first comments on new-look Lakers roster
With LeBron James’ departure, it was key for general manager Rob Pelinka to appease Doncic, as he now is the sole focus of this organization. Doncic has a player option for the 2028-29 season, so L.A. needed to make sure the infrastructure was in place to build a championship-caliber team.
Pelinka made a flurry of moves and ultimately culminated in an entirely new roster with plenty of new faces. Their moves have garnered mixed opinions from the public, but what matters is what their star thinks about the roster and he made his first comments about the team, describing his excitement level heading into this season.
