LeBron James suddenly became the most intriguing free agent this summer with his decision to not re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons.

The era closed as James’ longest uninterrupted tenure with one team at double his four seasons with the Miami Heat from 2010-14. James’ total number of seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers is 11, though he left the team after seven years to begin his NBA career before later returning.

Now James is fielding interest from several teams but is not in any rush to make a decision on where he’ll play for the 2026-27 NBA season.

LeBron James rumors and updates

July 1

76ers blockbuster and more?

On the heels of their reported agreement to trade Paul George to the Boston Celtics for Jaylen Brown, the Philadelphia 76ers registered interest in James, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic.

Nuggets interest

Facing some uncertainty with Nikola Jokic’s future and a complicated salary cap outlook, the Denver Nuggets entered the picture, according to Bennett Durando of The Denver Post.

James in the past has described Nuggets president Josh Kroenke as a “very dear friend.” Kroenke mailed a throwback Nuggets jersey to James in 2018 before he signed with the Lakers.

Rich Paul shares update

During the latest episode of “Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul,” James’ agent said he had already spoken to “about 12 to 14” teams that are interested in the four-time champion. Paul declined to otherwise provide any specifics.

June 30

Timberwolves trying to pounce?

Having already reached multiple agreements to dramatically change their roster, including acquiring LaMelo Ball, the Minnesota Timberwolves expressed their interest to James’ camp, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

Miami return?

Another early scenario involving James is a potential return to the Heat. Doing so would form a strong frontcourt with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

Warriors and Cavaliers interest

Immediately after it became public that James was leaving the Lakers, the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers were identified as likely suitors.

There had already been some traction to the Warriors’ interest before Rich Paul informed the Lakers of James’ decision, and it was connected to a prospective trade with the Washington Wizards to acquire Anthony Davis.

Lakers notified of LeBron’s decision

Several hours before free agency officially opened, it was announced James planned to extend his unprecedented career to a 24th season but it was not going to come with the Lakers.

James was said to be motivated by seeking happiness and playing for a championship contender, even if it means signing for the veteran minimum.
