Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic is in the prime of his career and coming off an excellent season in which he finished fourth in MVP voting and was selected to the All-NBA First Team for the sixth time in his career. However, injuries derailed the end of the year for Doncic as a Grade 2 left hamstring strain kept him out for the entire postseason.
This, of course, meant that Doncic failed to win the NBA Championship, which he has regularly said is the biggest goal for him and now the Lakers enter this offseason poised to improve the roster surrounding their superstar. And according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Doncic badly wants the Lakers to build that level of roster immediately, as they had previously promised him would happen:
“Luka wants to be a championship team yesterday,” a source close to Doncic said. “Ever since the trade, they’ve always told us: ‘summer of ’26. We’ll show you in the summer of ’26.’ So, we are so excited that the summer of ’26 is here.”
Doncic has said that winning a championship is his priority on numerous occasions and even labels any season that doesn’t result in a ring as a bad season. The Lakers are armed with nearly $50 million in salary cap space and multiple first-round picks they could trade this offseason, so now is the time for them to make good on things and put a championship-caliber roster around the guard.
With multiple avenues with which to improve the team, it is unclear what path the Lakers will choose, but the front office has remained in contact with Doncic throughout the offseason so his desires for the roster are known. Chief among them will undoubtedly be an ideal center who is a lob threat on offense while being able to protect the rim on defense. True 3-and-D wings will also surely be targeted as having shooters around Luka only makes him that much more dangerous when attacking the rim.
As was said, the Lakers have always targeted the summer of 2026 as the time where they can make the moves to build this roster up so Doncic and the rest of the basketball world will be watching very closely to see if they come through.
Luka Doncic fully healthy to begin offseason training regimen
One positive for Doncic personally is the fact that he has finally fully recovered from the hamstring strain that ended his season prematurely and is good to go as he begins his offseason training.
